Hugh Bruce (1889 - 1933)
Hugh Howat Bruce was born 13 May 1889 in Sornhill, Hurlford, Ayrshire. He was the youngest of nine
children born to William Bruce (William ‘Bruce’ Hendrie) and Grace Howat. They had married on 29
November 1871 just after the birth of their first child Janet Bruce. There was an eighteen year age
difference between eldest and youngest children
Hugh’s father, William Bruce, died on 8 Oct 1890 when Hugh was only 17 months old. This left his mother
with eight children to raise. From the 1891 Census it appears that Robert Bruce, the eldest son, was the
only wage earner at that time, following his father 'down the mine'.
