1911 Census - Hugh Bruce
Hugh Bruce’s eldest brother Robert Bruce married Annie McNeish in 1904 and by 1911 they were living in 2 Maxwood Rows with four children. Not
surprisingly Hugh had moved out and was living as a boarder with John Bunten and his family (wife, Marion 'May' Bruce and 2 children) at 17 Orchard
St, Galston which housed four families. Just two of the rooms they occupied had windows. Marion was Hugh’s sister. John Bunten and Hugh Bruce were
both coal miners.
Hugh Bruce married Annie Torrance at 32 Brown St, Greenholm, Galston on 31 Dec 1913.
Annie Torrance was the daughter of Archibald Torrance (1869 - 1952) and Elizabeth Houston (1862 - 1894).
Hugh and Annie Bruce had two children : Elizabeth Houston Bruce (b 1914) and William Torrance Bruce (b 1917). Both were born in Brown St at
numbers 55 and 3 respectively.
The photograph shows Hugh and Annie Bruce and their daughter Elizabeth. The dog
is 'Flossie', a smooth-haired terrier which was left at Railway Station which was at the
end of Brown St ('a bundle of fluff').
