1861 Census - William Henry Mary Mathieson’s first son William Henry was not living with his mother. He appears in the 1861 Census as William Bruce (age 11, b Galston, Worker in Cutting Works) who was living with his grandmother Marion Bruce (57, b Kilmarnock, widow, hand sewer) in Howies Square, Galston. He appears to have adopted his grandmother’s surname. William and Janet Howat and their family (including William's future wife Grace Howat) were the next but one family in the census.
