Robert and Annie Bruce had five children whilst living in Maxwood Rows, two of whom died in their first two days of life.
In the 1911 Census Robert Bruce was living with his wife, his 'adopted son' Robert McNeish and his three children at 2 Maxwood Rows, Galston. The
census indicates that another child had been born but not survived. Next door at number 3 was his sister Lily Howat Bruce who had married John
White, a coal miner, on 26 July 1901. They had had six children, four of whom had survived. Both of these families of six were living in houses with just
one room which had 'one or more windows'.
Robert Bruce died on 23 Jul 1922 (aged 48) in Maxwood Rows. Cause of death was given as "Vascular disease of heart. Cerebral haemorrhage (3
days)".
Annie Bruce continued to live in 2 Maxwood Rows until her death (aged 60) on 12 Feb 1939. Cause of death was “Carcinoma of stomach”. It is amazing
that the slum dwellings which were Maxwood Rows were still inhabited in 1939.
