At the age of 21 he fathered an illegitimate child with Grace Howat who lived just a few doors away in Ironwork Square. Janet Bruce was born on 12 Sep 1871. Just over two months later William (aged 21) married Grace Howat (aged 18) on 29 Nov 1971. He appears as William Bruce Hendrie on the marriage certificate and states that his father was a 'general labourer'. His father is not described as deceased which suggests he was probably still alive.
