1881 Census - William Bruce
So where was William Bruce at the time of the 1881 Census?
There was a William Bruce living in the area at the time of the
1881 Census (Sunday, 3 April) at Burn (2½ miles south of Galston
on the Sorn Road). He was married and his age and birth
location fit those of Grace Howat’s husband. However, he was
working as an agricultural labourer rather than a coal miner. On
all other documents William is reported to be a coal miner. Apart
from this one discrepency this is a likely match.
On 16 Jul 1881 Grace Bruce gave birth to Marion Irvine Bruce
at Burn Cottages, Galston, which provides some support for this
being the correct William Bruce. The birth certificate states
William is a coal miner.
