1841 Census At the age of 16 William Bagshaw was a joinery apprentice in Edingley. It appears that William’s two eldest siblings John and Millicent were born in Edingley so there may be some family connection. Also Millicent married John Green, a joiner and inn keeper. Coincidence? 1851 Census By the time of the 1851 Census William Bagshaw had moved 25 miles north-west from Edingley to Staveley. The 26 year old William, a carpenter, was lodging next door to the Winterbottom family, including their 14 year old daughter, Sarah. Sarah Winterbottom was born in 1835, in Sheffield Yorkshire, the daughter of David Winterbottom, a foundry dresser, (b 1808) and Sarah Downing (b 1808). Two years later, on 1 Aug 1853, William Bagshaw (28) married Sarah Winterbottom (16) in Barnsley, Yorkshire (30 miles from Staveley). On the occasion of their marriage the both stated their age as ‘Full’, i.e. 21 or over, which was wrong and could be the reason they married so far from home; perhaps without her parents’ permission? On 13 Oct 1853 their daughter Emmley was born in Brimington which is two miles west of Staveley. Tragically Emmley died on 28 Nov 1854.
