After their marriage in 1863 Edward and Maria had two daughters prior to the 1871 Census. They were Lizzie Maria Green (b 1867) and Bessie Maria Green (b 1870). Mother Maria was by then a dressmaker. Though Lizzie and Bessie are now considered shortened forms of Elizabeth they were commonly used as independent names in the last half of the nineteenth century. They were born in Chesterton which is a suburb in the north-east corner of Cambridge, 1.5 miles north of Cambridge station, on the north bank of the River Cam. This family seemed to move home quite frequently. 1871 Census In 1871 the family was living in a house in City Rd, Cambridge. It is very close to where Maria had previously lived in Burleigh St (shown in red). A son, William Edward Green, was born on 15 Nov 1872 while the family were living at 13 City Road, Cambridge. At that time the father Edward’s occupation was given as Commission Agent so it does appear that Edward was struggling to find continuous employment.
