1851 Census William Harlington could not be found in the 1851 Census but three generations of family members were to be found living together in South St, Goole. They are shaded grey in the diagram below. South Street was at the very heart of the docks area and one must presume that the menfolk were away on boats, either at sea (mariners) or on the rivers/canals (watermen). William is still described as a 'waterman', i.e. working on inland waterways or rivers, whereas the other missing menfolk were 'mariners' who worked at sea.
