Who was William Hendry?
Tracing this branch of the family back through time has
always stopped at the entry in the 1851 Census for
William Henry, the grandson of Marion Bruce. Even
finding this record was problematic as the name had
been mistranscribed as William Harry.
The following pages detail the search so far.
Assuming the father of William Henry (b 1850) and Margaret
Henry (b 1853) was named William Henry/Hendry/Hendrie as is
stated on most documents (including the two children’s baptism
records), it seemed sensible to search the 1851 Census on
Scotland’s People for anyone of that name living in Ayrshire. The
possibility that he was elsewhere has not been excluded but it
seemed sensible to start in the area around Galston, Ayrshire. 23
people were listed at the locations shown on the map.
Only Kirkmichael which is 25 miles south-west of Galston, near Maybole, is
not shown on the map.
