George Johnson must have moved to Stockton-on-Tees and begun working in the grocery trade some time between 1861 and 1869 because he
married Jane Elizabeth Wilkinson on 27 Mar 1869 in Stockton-on-Tees.
From the certificate : George Johnson (aged 28), bachelor, grocer of Stockton, father Peter Johnson (groom) and Jane Elizabeth Wilkinson (aged 20)
of Stockton, father Richard Wilkinson (stonemason).
Jane Elizabeth Wilkinson was a stumbling block when attempting to move further back in time with this branch of the tree because Jane Wilkinson is a
common name. The break-through came with the 1891 Census in which a Mahala Blenkhorn was a visitor in the household of George and Jane
Johnson. This uncommonly named person turned out to be Jane Elizabeth Wilkinson’s niece. Full story to come on Wilkinson branch of this site.
In the 1861 Census Jane Wilkinson, 13, b Osmotherly, was a farm servant to William Monkman (a farmer with 43 acres) below Village, Kirby in
Cleveland. Kirkby in Cleveland in just 5 miles from Nunthorpe where George Johnson was a ploughman so this seems a likely match.
Ten years previously Jane, aged 3, was living with her parents Richard and Amelia Wilkinson and two siblings.
Richard Wilkinson, 40, Head, Hand loom weaver linen, b Osmotherley
Amelia Wilkinson, 40, Wife, b Whitby
Morton, 7, Osmotherley
Joseph, 4, Osmotherley
Jane, 3, Osmotherley
The occupation of Jane’s father Richard is different to that of 'stonemason' recorded on Jane’s marriage certificate. Richard Wilkinson had died in 1857
when Jane was 9. He was buried in Osmotherley where Jane’s mother was living alone as a widow in 1861. She was working as a field labourer.
I haven’t discovered what happened to Amelia Wilkinson after 1861.
