Rather strangely Richard and Amelia turn up in Willington, County Durham in 1841. The place of birth for the whole family is stated as 'Not in County
Durham'. This needs to be investigated further, though the names and ages are a good match. Willington is a small town seven miles south west of Durham
City and four miles north of Bishop Auckland. The population of Willington increased from 258 in 1841 to 965 in 1851. This was because of the rise of
the coal mining industry in the area.
1851 Census
By 1851 Richard Wilkinson and family were back in Osmotherley with Richard working as a hand loom weaver of linen. They had had six children up to
this point but only three are living with them. The eldest daughter Malaha was living in Osmotherley with her grandmother Tamar Wilkinson. The next
daughter Mary is a puzzle as I can find no record of her. With a dob very similar to that of Mahala there is either a mistake or they are the same person.
