Thomas Rowland died on 1 April 1886 , aged just 33, leaving his wife Violet with a 2-year old daughter, Elizabeth Ann, to bring up. Violet Ann moved to live with her parents and at the time of the 1891 Census was living at 21 New Road, Dobcross. In 1901 Violet Ann was living with her daughter Elizabeth Ann and brother Joseph Wood in Marsden. Glen Royd is a substantial building which in 1901 was occupied by a number of families. It still stands, picture left, on the busy Manchester Road (A62). Elizabeth Ann Rowland met Robert Johnson who had travelled from Stockton-on-Tees to work in Marsden as a plumber. They married on 2 Aug 1909 in Marsden. The couple lived for a short time in Argyle St, Marsden with Violet Ann Rowland. Their first child was born in Marsden and the family, including Violet Ann Rowland, moved to Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham just before the start of World War One. The story of Elizabeth Ann and Robert Johnson can be found on the Johnson branch of this tree.
