1901 Census In 1901 Alexander Crichton was living with his eldest son Alexander Bruce Crichton (b 5 Nov 1862) and his wife Marion (née Tennant). Alexander is described as Married. Alexander’s wife Mary Crichton was a Patient in Ayr District Lunatic Asylum over 50 miles away. The total 230 bed Ayrshire District Asylum opened on 28 July 1869. Two ward wings were added in 1879, the recreation hall was extended in 1886 and the wings were extended again in 1894. Two villas were completed in 1899 and a separate hospital block, designed by John Bennie Wilson, was added in 1906. Ayr District Asylum remains open now as Ailsa Hospital. The photograph above was taken in 2008. The building to the left is one of the villas built in 1899. Alexander Crichton died in 1909 of chronic bronchitis in Shettleston, Lanarkshire. The death was reported by his son Alexander Bruce Crichton who reported him as the widower of Mary Mathieson (incorrect - she was still alive in Ayr Asylum).
