William Hendrie (1826 - )
William Hendrie was an unmarried Engineer living in 1851 with his sister Margaret and widowed mother Agnes.
William was one of at least six children born to William Hendry and Agnes Stewart. Agnes died on 3 Oct 1857 and the registration states she was the
‘widow of a mason’. The informant was eldest son Thomas Hendry.
A William Hendrie who was born in Catrine married Helen Neil on 9 Nov 1851 in the Gorbals, Glasgow. There is some confusion here as they are both
listed as unmarried in the 1851 Census taken 30/31st Mar 1851. However, the birth record of their first child, Agnes, on 15 Mar 1851 states that
William Hendrie, engineer, was living in East Field, and that he and Helen Neil were lawfully married. Helen Neil was listed as unmarried and living at
Eastfield in the 1851 Census, while William Hendrie (unmarried) was in Sorn with his widowed mother. There may be a major error here if there are
two William Hendries of similar ages from Catrine who were both engineers.
They had at least eight children. William worked in the engineering trade all his life, much of which was spent living in Bonhill, Dunbartonshire.
William Hendrie (1772 - 1853)
In the 1851 Census two William Hendries (father and son) could be found living at Gateside Farm, Cumnock Rd, Ayr. This is about 15 miles from
Galston.
