William Henry (1824 - 1905) In 1851 this William Henry was a coal miner living in the parish of Kilmaurs approximately eight miles from Galston where Mary Mathieson gave birth to William Bruce Hendrie. He was born in 1822 in Dundonald, the son of John Henry and Marion Cockburn (b 1789) and one of at least five children all born in Dundonald. Though the distance from Dundonald to Kilmaurs village amounts to several miles, the move from Dundonald into the parish of Kilmaurs, close to Gatehead and its colliery, is much less as Gatehead is very far south in the Kilmaurs parish. Going by the ages and children’s names this entry in the 1841 Census shows that the family has moved the very short distance from Dundonald to Gatehead Colliery in the parish of Kilmaurs some time between 1825 and 1841. 1841 Census - Gatehead Colliery, Kilmaurs Widow Hendry (47) William Hendry (17) Coal miner Mirran (Marion) (14) Francis (11) Coal miner Following on in the 1841 Census is William’s brother David Hendry (25), a coal miner, his wife Isabella (25) and two children, Agnes (5) and Mirran (3). William Henry married Helen (or Ellen) McFarlane in the parish of Kilmaurs on 16 Aug 1845.
