For simplicity I will refer to the person whose DNA showed a match to the author of this site as Joan (not her real name). The DNA connection shows that the most likely relationship is that Joan is the daughter of my fourth cousin (25.7% probability). If I have got Joan’s ancestry correct this doesn’t work out date-wise and would involve some a 3rd great-grandparent having two children with the same name. Less likely according to the DNA analysis but fitting in much better time-wise would be that Joan and I shared the great great grandparent, William Hendry, b1826 in Ireland (10.4% probability). There is not enough evidence to confirm this but I will continue to investigate. Questions to be answered include : When did William Hendry move from Ireland? DId he live in the Kilmarnock area around the 1850s and then move to the Hamilton area or was he always in the Hamilton area? The chances of finding his birth details in Ireland are slim so is there any other evidence to be found? The consensus of the documentation states his occupation to be coal miner. Was the designation of ‘Fireman’ applicable to a stoker of boilers?
